Grade one students delve deeper into language arts with a curriculum that includes Explode the Code, The Pegasus Program, Accelerated Reading, and a variety of multi-sensory activities. Reading comprehension is emphasized, and students are introduced to editing and rewriting using the Six Trait Writing Process. Writing activities include stories, poems, journal writing, book reports, and short research projects. A formal handwriting method continues to be taught.
In math, the skills of counting, writing, and identifying place value from zero to one hundred are developed, along with adding and subtracting two and three numbers with regrouping. Language-based problem solving and manipulatives continue to be used to help more abstract concepts become understandable.
The emphasis in social studies is to develop a better understanding of geography and the unique nature of different communities. Class activities such as a cultural festival and a look at holidays in other countries contribute to this focus. In science, the students experiment and observe using the scientific process. They begin to predict, draw conclusions, and hypothesize. Students observe the cycle of plants from seed to seed, comparing and recording the growth of a variety of seeds. They explore, discover, describe, and record the properties of solids, liquids, and earth materials such as rocks, minerals, and soil. The concepts of electric and magnetic energy are introduced.
