The grade two language arts program continues to build on earlier years, with increasingly complex concepts being introduced, including understanding meanings through context, literal comprehension, inferential comprehension, predicting outcomes, and drawing conclusions. The curriculum incorporates Explode the Code, Accelerated Reading, Vocabu-Lit, the Pegasus Program, Six Trait Writing Process and the Houghton Mifflin Spelling Program. Writing assignments include descriptive, persuasive, and creative writing. Students begin learning cursive handwriting.
In math, grade two students work toward completing addition and subtraction exercises with speed and accuracy. Manipulatives and games are used to introduce and review concepts. Word problems challenge students to develop reasoning skills and problem solving strategies.
An interdisciplinary approach in social studies emphasizes geography, history, sociology, and anthropology, and includes map and globe skills, and the development of thinking and communication skills. Key concepts that are presented during this year are viewed as a springboard toward lifelong learning, with respect and understanding for all communities and cultures being the desired outcome.
The units of study in science include Air and Weather; Insects; Balance, Force and Motion; and The Human Body.. Experimentation is usually done in cooperative learning groups so that children work together toward a final product. Students learn scientific methodology skills such as analyzing, predicting, evaluating, and formulating conclusions.
