Our students, parents, and faculty have given time and resources to many causes and organizations, including Andre House, St. Mary’s Food Bank, the Arizona Humane Society, Thomas Pappas School, Maryland Gardens Nursing Home, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the Toys for Tots program, and United Methodist Outreach Ministry. For the past two years, the Church and School have participated in the Sweet Dreams Project, which provided pillows, hand-sewn pillowcases and books to children in foster care. Classrooms adopt families and participate as Christmas Angels during the holidays, and students respond quickly when there is a need to support a community, such as the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
At All Saints’ Episcopal Day School, we view serving others as an important part of the students’ formation as human beings. Students at each grade level, after discussion and reflection and with guidance from the faculty, choose a service project each year. Students are encouraged to care for others through these volunteer activities and then to come back to the classroom to discuss and reflect upon their experience. We want them to probe the systematic issues involved with why people are homeless, hungry, and without the necessities they need to survive and thrive.
