Preschool Halloween Crafts

Halloween is the perfect time to take on some creative crafts with your preschooler.
Before you know it, little ones will be floating around town, donning fairy costumes and ghostly garb. The sugary season of Halloween is upon us once again, and there are plenty of ways to get your preschooler excited about this autumn holiday.

Obviously, the candy and make-believe apparel have something to do with the love kids show for this fantasy-filled occasion, but that's not all there is to it! Halloween is the perfect time to take on some creative crafts with your preschooler.

Look at a few fun things we've found for you:

Toilet Roll Mummies

Over at Happy Hooligans, crafter Jackie has created a simple-yet-fun Halloween project that's perfect for kids of all ages. With just a few simple ingredients, your kiddo can turn an everyday toilet paper roll into a household accessory that's fit for Halloween festivities.

To make your Toilet Roll Mummies, you'll need:
  • Empty toilet paper rolls
  • White tissue paper, crepe paper, or medical gauze
  • White yarn
  • Googly eyes
  • Glue
Tear your paper into strips, but don't worry about how rough the edges are; remember, mummies don't have much of a fashion sense! Paint a coat of glue around the entire toilet paper roll. Now, wrap your mummy in paper or gauze strips. Start at one end of the tube, and wrap the strip until it runs out, press it into the glue, then start anew with a fresh strip. Wrap the yarn around the tube a few times, and finish off by gluing on the googly eyes.

Paper Plate Pumpkins

Clare's Little Tots has come up with an easy solution for a time-treasured Halloween craft: creating kid-perfect pumpkins.
For this exercise, you simply need:
  • Paper plates
  • Orange paint (If you're okay with your preschooler getting a little messy, go for orange finger paint. It makes the experience more fun!)
  • Black and green construction paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors
Set the materials out beforehand so it's all within grabbing distance when excited little hands are ready for the next step. If your child isn't ready to use scissors yet, go ahead and cut the paper into the shapes you'll use for the pumpkin's face. If you're preschooler is learning how to incorporate hand-eye coordination with his or her cutting skills, trace the shapes onto the paper first, then guide your child's hand as he or she does the cutting.

Start by covering the plate with orange paint, then let it dry. You might need to have another craft lined up and ready while you wait because little kids can be impatient when fun crafts get started!

When it's dry, glue on the eyes, nose, and mouth. Top it off with a green stalk, and display your child's art for everyone to see!

Jell-O Worms

Let's face it, little kids love everything that's ewey, gooey, and gross. Jell-O worms are the perfect accessory for any preschool-filled Halloween party. One Little Project's Jell-O Worms will suffice when it comes to unenticing elements that kids can't get enough of!

Here's what you'll need:
  • A pack of flexible plastic straws
  • 1 package of raspberry or strawberry Jell-O
  • Whipping cream
  • Green food coloring
  • 3 packages of unflavored gelatin
  • 1 mason jar (or something to hold the straws together in an upright position)
All you need to do is combine the Jell-O and gelatin with boiling water, stir, and let cool until it's lukewarm. Pour the liquid into straws, refrigerate, squeeze, and squirm!
